From Nurse Walker:
All 11 year old 6th graders have to have the Tdap vaccine before starting school, this is a state law. Your child will need this vaccine and an updated immunization form turned in to the school nurse before you can complete your child's registration and get their schedules and start classes. Doctor's offices and the health department get very busy during the summer trying to get these shots done and if you wait too long you won't get an appointment. If your 5th grader is already 11 or will turn 11 before school is out, please go ahead and get the Tdap vaccine and get an updated immunization form to me. I can get those put in the computer before summer and you will then have no issues at registration. If you wait until the summer or your child does not turn 11 until the summer, please take the updated immunization form to the middle school your child will attend.
Health Room End of the School Year Procedure:
Medications are NOT held in the Health Room from one school year to the next. Students are not allowed to carry their own medications as policy states by the State Department of Education. Therefore, an adult will need to pick up your child’s medication by noon on May 24. Any medication that is left in the Health Room will be discarded after noon on May 24, 2018
Remember, a new medication authorization form will be required for all medication at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. This authorization must be signed by both the physician and the parent/guardian. Authorization forms are available in the Health Room for pick up at any time or on the Hoover City Schools website School Health link. No medications can be given at school without this completed form.
Curriculum News
Language Arts:
We are working on a research project (for fun) on planning a vacation. The kids will research and work together in partners to finish this up during the week. The students are also working on reading the rest of their book talk books in class. The requirements are on the following link: Book Talk.
Math: We are working to the bitter end! We are moving from working exclusively with decimals, and will now be focusing on graphing and algebra patterns. For the first part, we will be dealing with number-lines and coordinate graphing. This will lead us into graphing patterns, and eventually creating algebraic equations that allow us to predict patterns of distant, of higher numbers. Throughout this, we will also be looking at, and reviewing, the characteristics of two-dimensional shapes.
Science: In science, we are wrapping up our last unit. We are putting the finishing touches on parachutes, that will be used to drop our rockets and probes from the third floor of the school. Throughout this, we have been discussing drag, atmospheric density, and gravity.
Social Studies:
We are wrapping up our study of the Civil War. We will finish up a few activities about Reconstruction during class.

We are still working with decimals. Specifically, we are looking at multiplying and dividing decimals. To help us understand, we are sometimes changing decimals into equivalences. For instance, in the problem 1.5 divided by 0.3, we may think of 1.5 as 15 tenths, and 0.3 as 3 tenths. This helps, as we work towards more traditional methods of multiplication and division, where we sometimes thing of 15 divided by 3 and then "place" the decimal point in our answer. This thinking gives us a reference, as to why this more traditional method works.
In science, we are putting together parachutes, and experimenting with changes that help or hurt their performances. Ultimately, we will create a final parachute design and drop our rockets or probes from the third story window.
In Social Studies, Ms. Owens will be finishing up the Civil War Unit by showing a video that summarizes all aspects of the war. We will review, playing a game called Kahoot, and will have an Open Note Quiz on Friday. The students Table of Contents will be collected on this day, as well.
In Language Arts, Ms. Owens will finish up the Poetry Unit. Students should have all poems included in their Google Slide. Tomorrow, we will all participate in a Poetry Slam on our hallway. Mrs. Owens will grade the students on their presentation as well as the poems that they collected in their Google Slides.

Now that testing is over, we can refocus on the rest of the standards we need to teach. We will review multiplying and dividing fractions, and then move back into multiplying and dividing decimals. We will use models of arrays and 10 x 10 grids to help us visualize the concept of groups of decimals within decimals, but we will quickly move into more traditional algorithms.
In science, we are working on developing a space craft that meets certain criteria. Each group must design a craft fro specific reasons, to perform specific functions, and survive specific conditions. Later, we will look at parachute designs and attach them to a scale model of our space craft. Through this experiment, we will learn how to reduce the effects of gravity on an object.
We will continue our study leading up to the Civil War. Students will learn about several issues during this time period, including the effects of slavery, the Compromise of 1850 and Abraham Lincoln and the presidential election.
Next week, students will be reading a passage that goes hand-in-hand with our social studies curriculum called, "Freedom or Death." Students will use what they learned to complete a sequence chart of the main points of the story, as well as think critically about the events of the story.

In math, we are starting our unit of decimals. We will focus on multiplying and dividing decimals, while using word problems to challenge our thinking. We will not have homework, this week, as we are testing.
For science, we are about to start a new unit concerned with how to reduce the effects of gravity. In this unit, we will design and test parachutes, using different materials and designs. After this, we will use our knowledge of the solar system to design space probes and crafts.
We will begin our Reform Movement Unit. Students will learn about several issues during this time period, including women’s rights and slavery. They will watch videos, as well as read information about the various reforms and work on a protest poster during class on a reform of choice.
Students will take the Reading portion of the Global Scholar test on Tuesday. Students are prepared for this assessment. Remind your child to take their time, read carefully, and choose the best answer. Students will have plenty of time to complete their test. Throughout the rest of the week, students will participate in a Readers’ Theater. We will work on fluency skills, reading dialogue with emotion, and constructing props for a performance!

In math, we are continuing to work with multiplying and dividing fractions, and being able to use models and illustrations to represent our thinking. We will also be working hard to solve higher level word problems, while utilizing these skills. Either, this week, or the next, we will review decimals, as we start our next unit concerning the division of decimals.
We are starting our new unit that focuses on using shadows to determine the general relationship between the sun and the earth. We will be looking for changes in the length and direction of these shadows, and what we can infer from this information.
We finished up our unit on Westward Expansion and the students learned reasons for traveling West. This week, we will focus on how America became Industrialized, due to the manufacture of textiles. This began the move of production from homes to factories, later developing into using technology to mass produce goods.
|
This week, we will review standards previously taught to prepare us for our state testing next week. We will practice example tests using various reading websites. We will also review words that are important to know/understand within the reading curriculum.

In math, we are moving from using illustrations to help us better understand what happens when we multiply fractions, to helping us understand what happens when we divide using fractions. We will start with conceptual ideas, and then use rich and challenging word problems. Again, using models will help us master this concept, as the students are challenged to attack problem-solving.
Last week, in science, we focused on using our previous understanding of concentration of solutions to better understand density. Specifically, we looked at why some object float, while others sink. Some of the experiments involved oranges, while others looked at sodas as we struggled with this concept. We used our tools to measure the mass and volume, and came to a mathematical proof. This week, we will begin our new unit about the sun, the stars, and the earth, and how we can use evidence to determine how they interact with each other. If the weather cooperates, will we start by looking at the shadows that the sun creates here on the surface of the earth.
We will finish our unit on Westward Expansion. The students will have a better understanding of how the U.S. gained land west of the Mississippi River and what the effects were of gaining this land. We will look more closely at the Indian Removal Act, Trails West and the California Gold Rush this week.
|
This week, we will read a piece of nonfiction text, "The Killer Smog." We will identify causes and effects of an event, quote accurately from a text, and compare and contrast the structure of the text.

In math, we are still working with multiplying fractions. We are doing great multiplying fractions by whole numbers and fractions by mixed numbers, and applying these ideas to word problems. Next, we will work on multiplying fractions by fractions. Remember, we are very concerned with the conceptual ideas behind this math, and not the algorithm.
In science, we are wrapping up our study of matter. We learned to look at the properties of matter to help us separate it from other matter. We used a solution's mass to help us determine whether a solution was more concentrated than another solution. We also learned to look for specific responses, in determining if a chemical reaction had occurred. Our next unit will focus on what sunlight can tell us about the relationship of the earth, the sun, and other stars, and how gravity affects objects.
In Social Studies, we will understand how the social, political and economic events between 1803 and 1860 led to the expansion of the territory of the U.S., including the War of 1812, the Indian Removal Act, the Texas-Mexican War and the Mexican-American War. A study guide will come home on Friday and we will test the following week on Westward Expansion.

In math, we have finished our look at the first standard dealing with decimals. We are about to return to fractions. Before the break, we worked on fractions, and eventually how to add and subtract them. Now, we will look at multiplying and dividing fractions. Again, our main focus is with the concepts behind these procedures. We will use fraction bars, arrays, and other ways to illustrate what happens as we manipulate fractions and whole numbers.
In science, we are at the tail end of our work dealing with the ideas behind mixtures and solutions, as well and concentrations and densities. We will utilize this knowledge to gain a better understanding of the differences between chemical and physical changes.
I'm so proud of the students' hard work in memorizing the Preamble! They did a great job!
We will begin our next unit on Westward Expansion, focusing on the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark's expedition this week. |
This week, we will read a short story called "Stray." We will use reading strategies to help us understand the text, as well as work on summarizing.

Last week, in math, we used our understanding of decimal values to help us round. To do this, we are imagining where these numbers would be located on a number-line. We are also revisiting our concepts from earlier in the year, with place-values and powers of ten. These previous ideas will help us with writing decimals and whole numbers in expanded form, using exponents. We will also be using word problems to add and subtract decimals.
We are still working on the concept of concentration. In our classroom lab, we have had multiple opportunities to discover ways to find out if two different solutions may have different concentrations of a certain matter, by using equal amounts of a solution, and finding its mass. Later, we will use this understanding to help us define and work with the densities of different matter.
We will finish up learning about the New Government this week, in particular, the Bill of Rights. Students should have the Preamble memorized in order to recite tomorrow, Feb. 28. This will count as our Unit Test. I will also collect Table of Contents for this unit tomorrow. On Thursday and Friday, we will watch National Treasure as a culminating activity for this unit.
This video below will help: |
This week, we will read the poem, Something Told the Wild Geese. Throughout the week, we will identify and describe details of the poem's setting, as well as draw evidence from the poem to understand the author's meaning.

In math, we are still concentrating on finding decimals on a number-line. Soon, we will begin our look at decimals with arrays, and how they are represented. After working with the volume of decimals, we will begin to add and subtract decimals.
Last week, we finished up our focus on models, even though it will always be a part of our science. We discussed why and how scientists use models, and the characteristics of good models. This week, we are beginning to work with how mixtures and solutions can be different. Specifically, we are looking at how mixtures can be more or less concentrated with solutes. We will continue these activities, experiments, and observations this week.
In Social Studies this week,
we will learn more about the Constitution, understand how checks and balances work within the branches of government and look more closely at the Preamble and Bill of Rights.
Instead of a unit test, the students will be required to recite the Preamble on Tuesday, Feb. 27. A copy of this will come home today!
They will have time each afternoon to practice for this. They should not have to spend time at home learning this if they use their time wisely in class. This video below will help:Song to help with Preamble |
This week, we will read a poem, Casey at the Bat, we will identify how characters change by looking at their actions and words, identify change in mood and pick out the turning point in the poem.

District Wide News:
On Feb. 28 our district has designated this day as pink shirt day. The goal is to bring awareness to bullying and help bring out kindness. (We want every student in the district to be wearing a pink shirt on this day!!) Our students can purchase a shirt on myschoolfees for $5.00 starting now until Feb. 7. Part of the proceeds from the shirt will go to a charitable cause. Since the theme of our shirt is from the book Wonder, we selected a cause related to it called My Face. They have a bully prevention program called The Wonder Project.
During the week of Feb. 28th the district has provided each school with yard signs, ribbons, banner, and each student will get a bracelet and sticker. We will be doing activities/announcements each day that week (similar to red ribbon week). More information to come.

In math, we are beginning our work with decimals. Our ultimate goal is not only to understand the meaning of a decimal, but to be able to add, subtract, and round decimals when needed. When students are able to utilize their previous understanding of fractions, it will help in mastering their understanding of decimals. For this week, we will focus on the connection of decimals and fractions, and how to represent this understanding with number-lines and arrays.
Last week, in science, we used our senses to infer what was inside some black boxes. In doing this, our focus was to see how models are used by scientists to better understand events and systems, that cannot always be seen with our eyes. We are continuing this exploration of models, as we talk about the "drought stopper", and produce models that might help us better explain how the system works.
In Social Studies this week,
we will understand how the Americans began to form their own government after the American Revolution was over. We will look specifically at the different Branches of Government and we will understand the difference between each branch.
|
This week, we will read an African Folktale: Thunder, Elephant and Dorobo. Througout the week, we will understand the point of view of the different characters by looking at their actions and words they use. We will also determine how the story would change when spoken from a different point of view.

In math, we finished part one dealing with fractions (part 2 will involve multiplying and dividing fractions). We worked hard to understand what fractions meant, and how to make equivalent fractions. We learned to add and subtract fractions, and how to best attack word problems involving fractions. We also learned how to make line-plots with fractions, and how to interpret the data that is described on these line-plots. Next week, we will begin to look at decimals. We will start by reviewing what we know about decimals, learn to round them, and then quickly move into adding and subtracting them.
We wrapped up the start of our matter unit. Our focus was on mixtures and solutions, and what characteristics made each unique. We also partnered together to brainstorm ways to separate mixtures into their component materials. We used coffee filters, screens, and our knowledge of evaporation to help us separate a mixture of salt, powder, gravel, and magnetite. We learned that the properties of each material, would help us determine the best ways to separate them. Next week, we study ways in which scientists use of models to help understand things that cannot always see with our eyes.
In Social Studies next week, we will finish up our study of the Declaration of Independence as well as prepare ourselves for the unit test on Friday. A study guide came home today.

We are finishing up our focus on adding and subtracting fractions. We started with understanding what a fraction meant, and making equivalent fractions. We are ending with thought-provoking word problems, in which we must decide whether to add or subtract fractions and mixed numbers. We are quickly moving to another form of fractions, as we learn to work with decimals, and specifically how to add and subtract them, while problem-solving.
In science, we are working with mixture and solutions. Our immediate concern is identifying matter and trying to separate them into their component parts. We will continue with this, for the next week. Much of our work is hands-on science, but we will also be asked to to use our knowledge to answer questions concerning similar situations.
We will continue our unit on the American Revolution. We will begin discussing the major battles of the war as well as understand the significance of the Declaration of Independence. Please continue to keep your Table of Contents neat and in order.

We are trying to finish up our focus on fractions. If the weather will cooperate, we should wrap things up next week. For this week, we are working with adding and subtracting mixed numbers, while trying to add enriching word problems. The next unit of study will be on adding and subtracting decimals, while making connections to the fractions we have been working with, in class.
In science, we are starting our new unit on matter. We will specifically begin by looking at mixtures and solutions. This unit will be another great hands-on unit, that will teach the students about the big and the small parts of matter, and how they interact.
We will continue our unit on the American Revolution. We will continue to learn more about the Patriots and Loyalists and look at Minorities that had a part in the Revolutionary War. Please continue to keep your Table of Contents neat and in order.

We are just into our study of fractions. We have been looking at what fractions mean, especially what the "whole" means. We will be paying attention to equivalent fractions. This week, as we get a deeper understanding of fractions, we will start to add and subtract fractions. And, as always, we will be using deep and challenging word problems to enrich our understandings.
In science, we are finishing our studies of eco-systems by examining how pollution can affect nature. We have been working hard on trying to help the city of Greentown. We are using our prior understandings to help us find clues, so that we can locate the cause of city-wide pollution. Later this week, we will begin to use the Engineering Process to create, design, test, and implement systems for cleaning an oil spill.
We will finish discussing events leading up to the American Revolution. Students will study their "Causes of the American Revolution Notes" and we will test on Friday. We have had a lot of practice in class, as we have participated in activities to prepare us already. We will watch videos, listen to songs and complete various tasks to develop our understanding.

We are beginning our study of fractions. To start this, we will be looking at what fractions mean, what they tell us, and how we use them. We will also be looking at how fractions can be equivalent, even though they use different numerators and denominators. In math, we are in the process of wrapping up our work with volume, and transitioning into fractions. With volume, we are looking at how we can find the volume of irregular shapes, by partitioning those same shapes into more manageable three-dimensional pieces. For fractions, we will begin by looking at what fractions actually mean, and what equivalent fractions look like.
In science, we are continuing our work on understanding pollution. We are watching how pollution affects the eco-columns that we created, and will continue to record our observations. Soon, we will put on our Environmental Engineering hats and help a town locate the causes of some mysterious events, while utilizing our knowledge of acids and bases, as we attempt to narrow down some possible solutions.
We will begin to understand the reasons why the colonists wanted to become independent from King George and discuss the events that led up to this. A new Table of Contents was handed out today. Please work with your child on keeping their Social Studies section organized throughout this unit.

The screening, which takes about one minute, is simple and not embarrassing. It involves a visual examination of the back while standing straight and bending over. Boys and girls will be screened separately.
Scoliosis is a twisting, or curve of the spine which occurs in about 10% of the adolescent population and about 2 ½% will require some type of medical attention. The first sign of scoliosis is usually noticed between the ages of ten and fourteen. If any symptoms are detected for your child, you will be notified by letter.
Please make sure your child wears a slip-on shirt or blouse on the screening day. Girls may wear a bathing suit top or bra which will remain on during the screening.
If you do not want your child screened, please send a letter to the school nurse, Tyra Walker, RN.

In math, we finishing our three-dimensional models of robots, that go from a two-dimensional design to paper prisms. Our next step is to begin to decompose three-dimensional irregular shapes, so that we can calculate the volume of these objects.
In science, we are continuing our work on understanding pollution. We are about to see how pollution affects the eco-columns that we created. Over the next few weeks, we will look for any changes that might occur.
We will finish our unit on Colonial America, focusing on jobs during colonial times. We will play a few review games for our test on Thursday. Please have your child study their study guide. :)

In math, we still are working on distinguishing the differences between area, perimeter, and volume. To accomplish these goals, we are creating area models for robots, that show a basic two-dimensional design for arms, legs, a body, and head. As we add cubic centimeters to our design, we will begin to see a three-dimensional form. Later, we will build a three-dimensional robot out of paper cubes and rectangles, that we measured.
In science, we are continuing our work on understanding pollution. We are focused on finding the differences between physical and chemical changes, and identifying acids and bases with an indicator. We will use "Red Cabbage" juice to help us determine whether an unknown substance is an acid or a base.
We will continue to look at life in the Southern, Middle and New England Colonies. We are comparing and contrasting schools, crops, houses, natural resources, etc. between the colonial regions. We will also learn about jobs that the colonists had during this time.

In math, we are wrapping up our focus on math procedures, and we are beginning our first big unit. We will begin by focusing on volume. We will look at how area and volume are related, and how we can use both to find the other. Throughout this unit, we will be utilizing our skills of multiplication and division.
In science, we are making connections to the eco-colums through our study of food chains, food webs, and how energy travels in an ecosystem. We are also beginning our look into how pollution can change an ecosystem. We will be looking at three specific areas of man-made pollution- acid rain, salt, and fertilizers.
We began our unit on Colonial America. We will continue to look at life in the Southern, Middle and New England Colonies. We completed a "mission" last week, trying to come up with a logical hypothesis of what happened to the "Lost Colony of Roanoke." The students enjoyed being "detectives" to help solve the case!

In math, we are finishing our work with strategies of multiplication and division. However, we will use this knowledge to better understand volume. We will be starting to work with understanding three dimensional objects, and how to view the amount of space they take up.
In science, we are wrapping up understanding the elements of living and nonliving materials that create an ecosystem. Now will be moving into how pollution and man-made materials interact with the ecosystems.
We are beginning our unit on Colonial America this week. We will look at life in the Southern, Middle and New England Colonies. We have fun things planned in this unit and cannot wait to see the fun the kids will have learning about how ¨America¨ came to be.

In math, we are finishing our focus on just multiplication and division skills. We are concerned with moving from an open-array model and partial product, to mastering the traditional algorithm. As we do this, we are still making connections to previous learning, while being able to explain how each previous step has brought us to this point. We are using a partial quotient method, instead of traditional, because we are able to see groups coming our of a larger set of "things". As we continue to work with these strategies, we will not stop using them to help us solve deep and challenging math problems. Problem solving will always be a strong element of our classroom.
In science, our main focus is to observe how the living and non-living elements interact with each other. As we do this, we will be talking about how energy makes it's way through an eco-system. We will continue this pursuit of understanding with the help of food chains and food webs. We are also discussing why and how producers are important to an eco-system. We will also be taking a deeper look at photosynthesis and the matter used in this process. Throughout these lessons, we will continue to make observations and inferences about their eco-columns, looking for changes.
We will look at items that came to America/were sent from America because of exploration "Cultural Exchange." We will finish up our unit on Explorers with a test on Wednesday. Our Table of Contents will be collected, and we will wrap the week up playing a board game "Sailing to the Indies." We will begin our next unit on Colonial America next week.

In math, we are still working on our multiplication skills. Specifically, we are concerned with moving from an open-array model and partial product, to mastering the traditional algorithm. As we do this, we are making connections to our previous understanding. We are concerned with being able to explain how each previous step has brought us to this point.
We will quickly be moving into division. In fifth-grade, we do not teach the traditional "long-division" method, but use partial quotient that uses our understanding of multiplication to show how many groups of a divisor are in a dividend. We are also working on understanding what any remainder might be telling us, as we solve word problems.
In science, we have put our aquarium and terrarium together. This connection completes our whole ecosystem in our own classroom. Our main focus, now, is to observe how the living and non-living elements interact with each other. During the next few weeks, students will be making observations and inferences about their eco-columns, looking for changes. Our early, and main focus will be concerning ourselves with how everything in an eco-system is connected, and how one area can effect another area within this system.
We will continue our unit on Explorers. We will understand the reasons for and the outcome of the exploration of European Explorers.Your students will be keeping track of their activities on their Table of Contents. Please make sure they are keeping this organized, as this is a grade that is given in each unit we study. At the end of class, students will be given 10 minutes each day to work on their first Social Studies project. A study guide will be handed out tomorrow and we will test next week.

We are wrapping up the last of our work with place-value and starting our focus on multiplication strategies. However, as the kids will tell you, we will continue to use our prior knowledge of powers of ten to help us with our multiplication. While we work at understanding different ways to look at repeated addition, we will focus these skills with problem solving in mind. Our ultimate goal is to understand and master the more traditional multiplication technique.
We are beginning to put together our eco-columns. We will be adding living and non-living elements into these columns of soil and water. The students will begin to make observations as we discuss natural changes and man-made changes. They are very excited.

In math, we will continue our work with place value and understanding how everything is based on powers of ten. As we practice, we will also be mastering multiplying whole numbers by multiples of ten. When we finish this unit, we will be relying on this understanding to help us with multiplying multi-digit numbers.
We are beginning our first full unit, in ecosystems. We started by discussing some of the terminology that we will use, plus going outside to look for some of these vocabulary terms. We will still need many more clear two-liter bottles to build our indoor eco-columns for our unit studies. Before we can build them, we will look at one specific area of life in nature, called symbiosis.
Next week, we finish our study of the "First Peoples of North America." We will take our test on Thursday or Friday and watch the movie, "Brother Bear," to compare what we learned about the ways these first people used the natural resources around them.

This week, we are still learning about place value, but really focusing on the powers of ten. We are using this knowledge to practice solving multiplication problems in which one of the factors is a multiple of ten. We will continue with this, as we transition into using different strategies for solving double digit multiplication problems.
In science, we will start the week by watching the eclipse. The children can bring a towel, and are encouraged to wear a baseball cap. This week, we will finish up our look at the differences between observations and inferences. We will soon start our work with ecosystems, but need empty clear two-liter bottles to create a living ecosystem.
Next week, we will continue our study of the "First Peoples of North America." We will learn about where each group settled, as well as the resources they used to help build homes, hunt for food, and make clothing. We will be working in small groups to complete a few fun activities, like making totem poles, igloos, etc.

This week, we will start our first unit study. Our initial classwork will deal with reviewing the place-value structure of numbers, in quickly counting. The ultimate goal is to master the base ten system of arithmetic and using this knowledge for applying multiple strategies when finding the sum of a group of numbers- especially using mental math skills.
Next week, we will begin discussing our procedures/expectations during Reading Workshop. Students will learn how to build their reading stamina and we will choose books to begin reading in class. Our grammar focus is on nouns, as we will incorporate this as we write in our writing journals, as well as during IXL. We will have a grammar quiz on Thursday (the students have the activity sheet that we have been working on in their binders).
In science, we will begin by looking at what scientists do, and how we think about them. From there we will learn about the differences between the observations and inferences that scientists make in their daily work. Finally, we will end the week by looking at the upcoming eclipse, and what we can expect to see.
Next week, we will begin our study of the "First Peoples of North America." We will learn about where each group settled, as well as the resources they used to help build homes, hunt for food, and make clothing.
